Thank You and TAB Update

Hey TAB volunteers:  If you didn't make the Volunteer Appreciation party this Monday, I want to let you know how much the library staff appreciate your help this summer.  So thanks for all those hours spend cutting, taping and gluing stuff for the Children's Librarians, entering the mountains of books I received into Excel, helping with programs, and any of the other tasks you worked on this summer.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

That said, we will be changing the Teen Advisory Board a little.  Going forward, we'll have two separate programs at the Auburn Library.  In the summer, we'll have a group of Teen Volunteers, who'll assist the Teen Librarian and Children's Librarians with tasks and programs in the library.  During the school year, we'll have our Teen Advisory Board, where Rachel will ask you for your help in planning programs, promoting library services to teens, and working on special programs that take place outside the library.  Since all this work requires a certain level of dedication, here's what I've decided to do:

If you're interested in continuing on as / becoming a TAB member, you must interview for a position.  TAB membership will be capped at 12 students.

If you are chosen to be a part of TAB, you must attend 5 out of 8 monthly meetings.  You must also commit to doing at least 5 hours of volunteer work for the library during the school year.  In return, Rachel will write a letter to your school letting them know about your participation in TAB.  You can also list her as a reference for job applications.

If you just want to volunteer at the library without being part of TAB, you will have to apply to be a summer Teen Volunteer.  Applications will be available in early June.  If you miss more than two volunteering dates, however, without prior notice you will not be asked to volunteer again.

Questions? Concerns? Cookies?  Send them my way!  To schedule an interview for TAB, email me at rmmcdonald@kcls.org or call the Auburn Library at (253) 931-3018.

Thanks,

Rachel

Summer Teen Book Club Meetings

roland3.jpg
Thanks to everyone who attended Roland Smith's talk earlier this month.  We were thrilled to have the author of Peak, Sasquatch, and many other exceptional books for teens visit the Auburn Library!  If you did not receive a copy of one of his books, there's still a few left - just ask Rachel at the information desk.  If you haven't checked out Roland's new series, I.Q., you can place a hold on the first book here.

Teen Book Club will be meeting and its regularly scheduled date and time (3rd Tuesday of every month at 4:30 pm) this summer.  Here's a list of dates and books we'll be discussing.

scorpion.jpgTuesday, July 21st at 4:30 pm:
The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer

In a future where humans despise clones, Matt enjoys special status as the young clone of El Patrón, the 142-year-old leader of a corrupt drug empire nestled between Mexico and the United States.

normal.jpgTuesday, August 18th at 4:30 pm: Define Normal by Julie Anne Peters

When she agrees to meet with Jasmine as a peer counselor at their middle school, Antonia never dreams that this girl with the black lipstick and pierced eyebrow will end up helping her deal with the serious problems she faces at home and become a good friend.

compound.jpgTuesday, September 22nd at 4:30 pm: The Compound by S.A. Bodeen

After his parents, two sisters, and he have spent six years in a vast underground compound built by his wealthy father to protect them from a nuclear holocaust, fifteen-year-old Eli, whose twin brother and grandmother were left behind, discovers that his father has perpetrated a monstrous hoax on them all.

Rainier Middle School Booktalks 6/15

Here's a list of the books Rachel talked about at yesterday's visit:

jolted.jpg

Jolted: Newton Starker's Rules for Survival by Arthur Slade

Many of Newton Starker's ancestors, including his mother, have been killed by lightning strikes, so when he enrolls at the eccentric Jerry Potts Academy of Higher Learning and Survival in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, he tries to be a model student so that he can avoid the same fate.  For fans of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians series.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

hunger.jpg In a future North America, where the rulers of Panem maintain control through an annual televised survival competition pitting young people from each of the twelve districts against one another, sixteen-year-old Katniss's skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister's place.  The sequel, Catching Fire, will be released in September.

reformed.jpg

The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks

Fifteen-year-old vampire Nina has been stuck for thirty-six years in a boring support group for vampires, and nothing exciting has ever happened to them--until one of them is murdered and the others must try to solve the crime.  NOT for fans of Twilight.

forest.jpg The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

Through twists and turns of fate, orphaned Mary seeks knowledge of life, love, and especially what lies beyond her walled village and the surrounding forest, where dwell the unconsecrated, aggressive flesh-eating people who were once dead.  Zombies + romance (not zombie romance, though!).

Peak.jpg

Peak by Roland Smith

A fourteen-year-old boy attempts to be the youngest person to reach the top of Mount Everest.  The author, Roland Smith, will visit the Auburn Library on Tuesday, June 16th.

It's Time for Summer Volunteering

Hey TAB members, today's the first day you can sign up for summer volunteering opportunities!  Here's how to do it: 1) Check the calendar on the right hand side of the page for programs (look for the word "volunteer").  2) Make sure you don't have any other obligations on that date (camps, family vacations, etc.).  3) Email Rachel at rmmcdonald@kcls.org to sign up.  4) Show up that day prepared to set up tables and chairs, control crowds, hand out stickers, food, flyers, books, whatever!  And remember, if you volunteer for 10 hours or more this year, you'll be eligible for your own snazzy TAB tshirt.  Here's a photo of our first tshirt decorating party on a windy day - we'll have another one soon!

TAB T-shirts are in!

Teen Advisory Board Minutes - April 20th

In Attendance:  Meshe, Crystal, Zayana, Ian, Catt, Alix, and Max

Kudos:

To Meshe and Crystal for helping with TechConnect at the Covington Library.

To Carston, Catt, Heather, Alix, Jessie, Crystal, and Toni (and her brother!) for helping with the Twilight Prom.  Our event was a huge success with about 80 teens attending!

To Marissa for designing the winning entry for our TAB logo contest.  Our new logo is featured on our t shirts!

To Gabriel, Max and Jamie for assisting with Game On set up and take down.

Game On:

Rachel received the following new games: for Xbox 360 NBA Live '09, Madden NFL '09, Skate 2, Need for Speed Undercover, and Burnout Paradise.   She has a new survey going and will order more games at the end of April.  Please visit the blog and post comments or get a paper copy from her to fill out.

Tournaments:

We have now Rock Band, which means we can hold a Rock Band tournament!   We decided on June 24th as the best date.  Rachel will need 3 to 4 volunteers to help with this.  Meshe, Crystal, Zayana, Ian, Alix, and Max are interested.

Programs:

Love to read? Want to get your hands on the latest books, even before they are published? Rachel is starting a new book group which will meet the first Tuesday of every month at 4:00.  The first meeting is June 2nd.

Ben had an idea for Yu-Gi-Oh program to be run at the library.  Participants could bring their cards and duel other players.  TAB members agreed that this is a good idea.  Rachel will work on scheduling this in July while we're taking a break from GameOn.

Short Story Contest:

Rachel would like to run a short story contest.  TAB members suggested July as optimal contest time.  She will need 2 teen volunteers (who can't enter the contest) for judging.  Any takers?

Summer Reading Program:

This year's theme is Express Yourself @ Your Library.  Any ideas for programs?

Some ideas from the Summer Reading Program manual: Local Authors Meet and Greet, Journaling Workshop (yes), Literary Magazine, Make an Altered Book or Journal (maybe?), Painting Re-creation Puzzle Drawings, Photography Show/Contest, Avatars, Teen-Made Film Festival , and Library PSA

 Library Stuff:

We need to schedule a day to have a video shoot for the TAB video.  May 11th we'll do painting and May 18th we'll shoot the video.  4:00 pm works for everyone here.

The Auburn Library is going to be expanded, and Rachel needs to know what you think of the teen area.  What would you change?  What should the new teen area look like?  What do we need more space for?  Windows!  Dri will come to speak to TAB in July or August.

Brenna will come in and talk about book selection later this summer.

Reminders:

Teen Book Club Tuesday, April 21st at 4:30

Writing Group Tuesday, April 28th at 3:30

Create the Next New Library Card Contest ends April 30th.  Win a $100.00 gift card to Barnes and Noble. Enter here: http://www.kcls.org/librarycardcontest/

Our next meeting is Monday, May 18th at 4:00.  See you then!

Twilight Prom Photos are up!

Twilight40.jpg
Thanks to all you TAB volunteers who helped out with Twilight Prom.  Our event was a huge success, with almost 80 teens attending!  We had trivia, cake, gave out door prizes, and watched the movie.  Without your help, there's no way Kaydria and Rachel could have handled decorating, taking photos, serving cake and punch, checking Read 3 forms, and dusting everyone with vampire glitter!  To see all the photos from the big event, click here.

So, my question to you is, what's our next big program?  Email me your thoughts or post a comment below.

TAB minutes 3/23

Okay, Tabbers, here's the rundown of what we discussed at our meeting this week:

Kudos to Catt, Heather, and Chrissy, for appearing in the Auburn Reporter promoting Great Stories Club!  The photo also appeared in our King County Library System memo.

T shirt update: T shirts will be given to TAB members who've completed more than 10 volunteer hours in the past year.  If you don't know if you qualify, ask Rachel.  She'll need to know what t-shirt size you need.  Once we get our t shirts, we'll plan on a date to do our movie promoting TAB.  On that note, we have a design for the t shirts, but no TAB logo! So...

TAB Logo Contest: Create a logo for TAB.  It must say Auburn TAB or Teen Advisory Board.  Please use Publisher to design your logos - it's available on the library computers.  Please email Rachel your design or drop it by the library.  The winner will receive a $10 gift certificate to Border's (your entry will be judged by your peers/fellow TAB members).  Entries must by received by March 30th, so get cracking!

And finally, the big news: the Auburn Library is slated for a renovation and expansion, and the design process will start soon.  Rachel asked what types of things you would change about the teen area.  Here's what we have so far:

Teen area is too cramped

More spaces to sit and read (couch, red net chairs, beanbags)

Lamps and (end)tables - living room feel

Colorful, but not barney-colored

Bigger tables

Computers reserved for teens only in teen area

Teens-only space

Please email Rachel any other suggestions you have for the teen area.  We'll definitely be discussing this more in the months ahead.  I am really excited at the prospect of a new teen space for all of you!

Reminders:

Twilight Prom, Friday, March 27th at 6:00 pm

Taiko drumming presentation, April 9th at 3:30 pm

Next TAB meeting is April 20th at 4:00 pm.  See you there!
