Imagine having a carbon rationing card that allowed you so many credits for using energy. If it got too low you couldn't get gas for your car. Meanwhile around the world there would be political unrest due to water shortages.Laura lives in this worldand is trying to make it as both a university student and a rock musician.
Some of her friends and her boyfriend are involved in student protests which become increasing violent as government forces try to suppress the unrest. When she returns to London to go back to the University, she encounters massive poverty, homelessness, and unrest. Her own home is blocked off to her due to thedebt she owes on it. She ends up squatting in an abandoned building where many subversives live.
When her band gets the chance to tour Europe she encounters cruelty anddisease worldwide while finding herself torn between two different guys.While checking on oneof her guys, who is suffering from malaria afterdoing humanitarian work in Africa, shewitness hardships and shortages so severe that she feels compelled to take a stand.
The Carbon Diaries 2017 imagines a future with huge shortages in resources and totalitarian regimes across the globe. Laura tries to take a stand in this chaos without putting herself in danger or being violent toward others. Inthis world of so much political dissensionthis is a tricky line to tow.
