It started on July 16, 1969, with the launch of a Saturn V rocket from the Kennedy Space Station in Florida.  The journey ended 8 days later with parachutes over the Pacific Ocean.

Neil Armstrong died recently.  He made "a giant leap for mankind" on July 20, 1969, as the commander of Apollo 11 and the first human to set foot on the moon.
