The days are shorter and colder and the holidays are upon us. Does this mean we can't still think about our fitness goals? No! If you are wondering where to begin, perhaps the best way to start is with your Body Mass Index, also known as BMI. What is it? How is it calculated? Our Walk With Your Libraries fitness trainer, Ashley Kurtz can tell us. Ashley says:
"Your BMI is an estimate of body fat based on your height and weight. BMI is a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.
To calculate BMI, determine height in inches and weight in pounds, and then use the following formula:
BMI = (Weight รท Height2) x 703
Begin by multiplying height times height, then divide your weight by that number. Finally, multiply that result by 703, and you will have your BMI.
Height _______________________
Weight _______________________
BMI _______________________
Your aim should be to maintain your BMI in the Normal range."
Thanks Ashley!
Now, how to find what is considered a normal or healthy BMI? Check our KCLS Database, Health and Wellness Resource Center (access requires a library card number and pin). Search the database with the words "Body Mass Index" and several charts can interpret your number. Still have questions? Give us a call or stop into one of our KCLS Libraries today. When the soldiers come, Arn is glad. He thinks maybe now there will be no more war, but it is only a few days before the soldiers tell them everyone must leave the city. They say the Americans are coming to bomb the city.
They leave on foot, carrying anything of value they could grab. Anyone who cannot keep up dies. After days of marching, they arrive at an empty field. The soldiers say some of the refugees can stop here; cut down bamboo; build huts. Now they work in the fields every day. Children, old people, everyone works all day digging ditches, planting rice. Their only breaks are to use the latrine. Their only food is a thin rice soup. Every night there are meetings where the soldiers tell them about the Revolution.
The soldiers ask questions about everyone's past. Were you a teacher? An office worker? What about your neighbor? His hands are so soft. Was he a shop keeper? An accountant? A doctor? Every day, anyone who was educated, or in the middle class disappears. They leave with the soldiers and never return.
Every day in the field Arn sees children die. Maybe they starve. Maybe they got malaria. They fall down, and they never get up. Through it all, Arn tells himself, "Never fall down."
***************
The Khmer Rouge came to power in Cambodia in 1975. In four short years, more than 2 million people died -- nearly 1/4 of the population. Never Fall Down is a novel based on the experiences of Arn Chorn-Pond, a real person who lived through those days. It includes horrific things that were done to him and equally chilling things that he did to survive.
