The snow was coming down so heavily this morning and then again this evening that I walked to and from the library--yes, in the snow! As I was walking along I was also enjoying the scenery and thinking about the many fiction and non-fiction books I have read featuring evocative scenes of winter and snowy landscapes. Two that came to mind were David Guterson's
Snow Falling on Cedars and Daniel James Brown's
The Indifferent Stars Above. Both books feature rich, descriptive language. You can feel the aching cold in Brown's non-fiction tale of the harrowing circumstances of the Donner Party's winter in the High Sierras. You can smell the scent of pine needles and feel the snow and mist on your face in the forest of the fictional northwest spun by David Guterson. Even if you can't--or don't want to-- get out in the snow, you can experience it through the many choices in the
KCLS catalog. And remember, if you decide to walk in the snow be careful, be aware of your surroundings and stay warm! To learn more about Walking With Your Library, visit our online
