Rhyme On Winners Announced

Over 600 teens participated in the King County Library System's Rhyme On teen poetry contest in April. That's a lot of poetry! After a panel of teen librarian judges spent many hours reading and discussing every entry, winners and honorable mentions were announced on the King County Library System's website on June 1.

We had two honorable mentions here in Issaquah: Emily M. for her poem "Brothers Room," and Emily F. for "Budding Leaves." Read all three of the winning entries and honorable mentions.

Congratulations to the winners and honorees!

Art Of The Written Word

To help celebrate the King County Library System's Take Time to Read Book Cover Walking Tour, ArtEAST Art Center has created a special exhibit, The Art of the Written Word, and will be offering free classes in March and April in cooperation with the King County Library System.

At the Decorative Writer class you'll cut, tear, glue, fold, paint, drill, add to, stamp, collage, bolt or string together parts to give damaged, recycled, or worn out books a new life. Learn bookbinding skills at the Designing Writer and practice your writing craft at the Practicing Writer. But these are only a few of many different things you can do at ArtEAST this spring. Learn more and check out the full schedule of upcoming classes. Ages 14 and older welcome. All classes will be held at ArtEAST, 95 Front St. N., Issaquah.

Teen Writing Competition

A new writing contest for teens from Hugo House this winter:

Hugo House seeks poems, short stories or personal essays of no more than 1000 words on the theme Gods and Monsters. The winner will receive $100 and an invitation to read at the third Hugo Literary Series event on February 19, 2010 alongside poets Linda Bierds and Terrance Hayes, novelist Garth Stein and the music of BloodHag. The competition is open only to students enrolled in grades 9-12; entries are due by January 11, 2010.

April: A Great Month For Writers and Readers

April is a busy month (it's true).

First of all, it's National Poetry Month which means it's a great time to catch up on poetry or take advantage of the many opportunities to get your own poems published and/or entered in poetry contests (hint: try Teen Ink, Weekly Reader and Winning Writers). Also, check out local National Poetry Month events and contests at the King County Library System, with Readergirlz, 826 Seattle, and at Seattle's Richard Hugo House.

Not only is it National Poetry Month but it's also the month of start-to-finish script writing: Script Frenzy. All you have to do is get to 100 pages but even if you don't get that far, it could be fun to try, right?

Why might you do this? How could anyone write an entire script in a month?
