Don't miss our last installment in this popular film series! This week we'll have the film "Margin Call." It's a fictionalized depiction of a financial firm (loosely based on Lehman brothers) whose executives realize that the company is over-leveraged, and executives at the highest level take steps to secretly engineer a massive sell-off of its toxic assets.

As with all our films, we'll have an introduction and Q&A with film historian Lances Rhoades. There will also be refreshments.

A big thank you (again!) to the Friends of the Mercer Island Library for their generous support for this film series. It's been a great season of films!

too_big_to_fail.jpgThis week's installment of our Wall Street Film Series will be "Too Big to Fail." This movie is based on the detailed and acclaimed book of the same name by Andrew Ross Sorkin, and tells the back-room stories of the U.S. government's response to the 2008 financial crisis.

As with all our films in this series, we will have an introduction and Q&A with film historian Lance Rhoades. We will also have refreshments, thanks to the Friends of the Mercer Island Library.

You can get a copy of Sorkin's book or download a copy of the ebook through kcls.org. We also have many other titles on this topic. Just search our catalog, or ask a librarian.

Inside_job.jpgOur Wall Street themed film series continues this Saturday with the film "Inside Job." This film is a penetrating investigation into the reasons for the collapse of global financial markets in 2008. Fervent in its approach, it raises serious questions about the culpability of individuals who were never held accountable for their actions, and won the 2011 Oscar for Best Feature Length Documentary.

All our film presentations in this series include an educational lecture and lively Q&A led by film historian Lance Rhoades.

Thank you to the Friends of the Mercer Island Library for sponsoring this film and discussion!

Pursuit of Happyness.jpgThis week's film is based on the true life story of Chris Gardner who, remarkably, lived on the streets of San Francisco with his five year-old son while interning to become a stockbroker at Dean Witter. Gardner eventually became the founder of a multi-million-dollar investment firm and philanthropist who sponsors many charitable organizations.

All the screenings in this series include an educational lecture and Q&A hosted by film historian Lance Rhoades. There'll be popcorn too!

Many thanks to the Friends of the Mercer Island Library for sponsoring this great film and discussion.

KCLS has several copies of Gardner's biography, if you'd like to read it beforehand. You can reserve a copy here.
