Young Mannig was just a girl when her happy childhood was ripped away during the tragedy of the Armenian genocide during World War 1. Orphaned and starving she clings to the beautiful memory of twirling in her pretty yellow dress feeling so elegant and loved, while now, in the dirty streets of Mosul, she scraps and begs for a morsel of food. This true story, written by Mannig's daughter, tells the story of loss, courage and hope against staggering odds. Left to walk the streets alone, Mannig makes her way, finds her only remaining family - her sister Adrine, and finds friendship and love amidst the efforts to rescue Armenian orphans.
Beautifully written, Between the Two Rivers is a moving personal account that tells one story of one family amongst the 1.5 million Armenians that perished. It's a story worth remembering to honor those whose stories ended far too soon.
Aida Kouyoumjian, Mannig's daughter, was born in Felloujah and raised and educated in Baghdad, Iraq. She came to the University of Washington on a Fulbright Scholarship in 1952. After a 30-year career teaching in the public schools, she now offers a course on Iraq at Bellevue College. She lives on Mercer Island.
