KCLSlogo.gif

We have several opportunities for teens at the Mercer Island Library.  Teen volunteers must be 14 years old or older.  You can contact Carrie Bowman clbowman@kcls.org if you are interested or if you have questions.  Openings vary, depending on the time of year, but we currently need volunteers to help with Teen Zone, the Paging List, and with various programs and displays. Thumbnail image for librarysmallest_volunteer.jpg

  • TEEN ZONE, Mondays and Wednesdays, 2-5 pm
Teen Zone volunteers set up tables and chairs in the meeting room and monitor behavior during the after school rush.  We want students in grades 6-12 to have a place to study and socialize!  We may give volunteers other tasks when we need help, but on most days you can do your own homework during Teen Zone.  We would like 2-3 volunteers by October 1.

  • PAGING LIST, various days, 1-3 hours/week
Paging list volunteers gather items from our collection that patrons have placed on hold.  Generally the list includes 150-300 items.  We provide training.

  • BLOGGING on the OTRS blog, on your own time, 2-3 times/month
What is the OTRs blog ??  Online Teen Readers, reading and blogging about what they read on their own schedule.  Check it out !

  • HELP with PROGRAMS, ART displays, BULLETIN BOARDS/DISPLAY cases, as needed
The library offers many programs for children, teens, and adults.  We also set up displays and bulletin boards to inform people about various issues and programs.  If you are creative and like to work with people, these opportunities are for you !

We have Study Zone volunteers on board for the fall, but you can apply at any time.  There may be openings in early 2013.

  • STUDY ZONE, Tuesdays, 4-6 pm
Study Zone tutors must be 16 years old or older.  Tutors help kids in grades K-12 in all subjects.  An application and two references are required.  You can find more information and an application on the Study Zone page.  KCLS provides training for SZ tutors.

Media Literacy for Tweens, Teens, and Parents

Teen Bliss_Makeup_Laura Heck.jpgMass media portrays teen bodies and teen lives so unrealistically, it's no wonder teens focus on celebrities, plastic surgery, and dieting.  Teens are bombarded with gender and racial stereotypes.  And teen images on TV, on the internet, and in magazines are misrepresented and manipulated.

How is self-esteem related to pop culture? How can we decipher messages about beauty, gender roles, and sexuality?  What does it mean to think critically about what we see in advertising?

Join us for a fun, interactive workshop that dives right into pop culture, including Hannah Montana, the Twilight saga, Gossip Girl, and reality TV shows.

Where:  Mercer Island Library meeting room

When:    Saturday, February 25, 2012, @  2 pm

Who:       guys and gals, ages 10-15, and parents

This workshop will be presented by Laura Heck, a marriage and family therapist in private practice in the greater Seattle area.  She specializes in working with the tween and teen population on self-esteem building.

Sponsored by Friends of the Mercer Island Library
