The Dragon of Trelian

In the Dragon of Trelian by Michelle Knudsen we meet Meg, who is not your ordinary princess. Dragon of Trelian.jpgWhile off on adventure she finds an abandoned baby dragon and somehow the two become linked. Dragons are considered dangerous and Meg doesn't know who to share her secret with, but she decides to trust the new mage's apprentice Calen. When they discover that traitors are going to kill Meg's sister to start a war, the two of them are off on an adventure that neither will forget. And along the way they form a friendship that will never fade.

A well written fantasy, Knudsen captures the less glamorous side of royalty and magic. The tediousness of lessons, the pressure to always do and say the right thing, and the fear of losing yourself.

If you liked Dragon Rider or Magyk, you'll enjoy The Dragon of Trelian.

About the Newbery Award

  • Since 1922 the John Newbery Medal has been awarded to "the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children". Each year a committee of librarians, book sellers, reviewers, and professionals who belong to the American Library Association's (ALA) Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC) meet in January to determine the winner. This hardworking committee has read an overwhelming number of books and face an extremely difficult decision.

You can read the award criteria here.

The King County Library System started its own Mock Newbery Board in 2005 as a professional development opportunity for Children's Librarians.

For the first time we invite parents and children to participate in our discussion and voting. Add your comments to blog posts and email your 2009 book suggestions to newberysuggestions@kcls.org.
