The Newport Way Library will be hosting a STARS program on October 4th at 6:30pm in the Newport Way Library meeting room, led by instructor Katy Keehn.  This program will provide 2
hours STAR Credit in Child Growth & Development and Curriculum & Learning Environment and focuses on connecting children to nature. 

Research shows that children who have regular experiences in nature are better able to develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially. Through engaging discussion and hands-on experiences, this workshop will explore the lasting effect nature has in facilitating a child's overall development. Abundant resources will be provided for creating outdoor spaces where nature is a joyful part of a child's daily play and learning. Please Join us!  Register online to attend this program.

Volunteer tutors provide free homework help. Students can find help in all subject areas, including Math, Science and English questions.

 

The program is open to all students grades K-12. Study Zone sessions are designed for a group setting; each tutor works with 1-5 students in a group setting. Study Zone tutors are not able to provide intensive, private one-to-one tutoring.

How do students join Study Zone?
There is no need to sign up in advance, just drop in any time during Study Zone hour. Students are not required to register or provide personal information to participate in Study Zone.  Can't make it into the library?  Check out Study Zone Online!

Buck, and follows headstrong Pearl as she grows up as the daughter of Christian missionaries in late nineteenth century China. She befriends Willow, a Chinese peasant girl, and with Willow she shares life's joys and sorrows, despite the Communist revolution.

If you haven't read it yet, no worries, there are plenty of copies available through our catalog! You can also download it as an eBook or eAudio through our Downloads page.

Did you know? Buck was the first American woman writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. She also won a Pulitzer Prize for her second novel, The Good Earth, which the book group is also reading. For available copies, check our catalog. As a classic, The Good Earth often will be shelved in the Teen Classics section (usually near Teen Fiction) in your local library.
