Newport Way Thanks Their VolunTeens!

Teen Vol Party 005.jpgNewport Way honored their hardworking Teen volunteers Wednesday June 30th with an appreciation party. Graciously sponsored by the Newport Way Library Association, teens enjoyed henna tattoos, button making and of course food!  Teens also took this time to complete a survey giving us feedback on our volunteer program and including suggestions they felt might strengthen our program for future volunteers.

Since our re-opening last April of 2011 Newport Way has had over 45 Teen volunteers work more than 1300 hours!  That is an average of 29 hours each!  With many of our Teen volunteers enrolled in honor classes, school sports and clubs it's amazing they find time in their busy schedule to help out at the library.  Newport Way staff is thankful for the help our volunteers contribute to our library daily, from pulling the holds list to assisting with special projects.  The library is a better place thanks to their hard work.  Thank you Newport Way Volunteers - we appreciate you!

Media Literacy for Tweens, Teens, and Parents

Teen Bliss_Makeup_Laura Heck.jpgMass media portrays teen bodies and teen lives so unrealistically, it's no wonder teens focus on celebrities, plastic surgery, and dieting.  Teens are bombarded with gender and racial stereotypes.  And teen images on TV, on the internet, and in magazines are misrepresented and manipulated.

How is self-esteem related to pop culture? How can we decipher messages about beauty, gender roles, and sexuality?  What does it mean to think critically about what we see in advertising?

Join us for a fun, interactive workshop that dives right into pop culture, including Hannah Montana, the Twilight saga, Gossip Girl, and reality TV shows.

Where:  Mercer Island Library meeting room

When:    Saturday, February 25, 2012, @  2 pm

Who:       guys and gals, ages 10-15, and parents

This workshop will be presented by Laura Heck, a marriage and family therapist in private practice in the greater Seattle area.  She specializes in working with the tween and teen population on self-esteem building.

Sponsored by Friends of the Mercer Island Library
