Young Adult author Scott Westerfeld spoke at 2 schools and presented an evening program on Thursday, October 11th. These programs were part of our Kim Lafferty Memorial lectures. Over 500 people attended the lectures. Scott talked about his inspiration for the first book in his successful and popular series, "Uglies" and how he writes. His comfortable, easy approach -- with many questions from the audience, made it seem as if the audience was really in conversation with him.

As the supervisor of a teen services librarian, I felt it was my duty to help her through her jitters over Scott's visit to Todd Beemer High School in Federal Way. Ok, that was just a good excuse to get to hear Scott talk to 150 - 200 teenagers, get one of my own books signed, and snap a couple pictures. He was a very engaging speaker, and quite approachable. I hope we will be able to have him visit a KCLS program again in the future.
